View Full Version : Multiple Domains on same server

Is it wise to have multiple domains sharing the same shared server from my host?
I know later it might cause BW issues as my sites grow, but do you think I have awhile before this will impact me?

You should be fine. There's nothing wrong with running multiple sites on the same servers. Make sure you use subdomains for your images as this will allow you to scale much easier in the long run because you can always just add a new image server.
Running multiple sites on the same server is fine, though it's recommended for search engine stuff that you put each site on its own IP. I still have sites that are on the same IP and have yet to have any problems. If it's your own server and you aren't sharing an IP with anyone else, it's probably not a big deal.
I would venture to say almost everyone who runs multiple sites has at least a couple sites on the same server.

Being on the same shared box, the resulting server load will probably be noticed a lot quicker than if your sites were on different boxes. I suggest asking your host if you can move each site to a different box.
In any event, when your sites get bigger than ~10K UV/day, you'll usually be noticed and the plug will be pulled abruptly.
...Back'em up ;)

Eek...
Don't want the plug pulled. Guess I will have to venture to find a host for my other site then. Thank goodness there are no databases involved, lol

yup its a common mistake for those first getting into this to just assume that bandwidth is the first and only issue to worry about. Bandwidth can easily be controlled by moving your images offsite to an image hosting provider like a Photobucket Pro account. Your first concern should be with CPU and resource usage but you probably wont have to worry about that until your sites start hitting the 8k - 15k a day range.

Yeah I have a ways to go, I just now hit 300uv...lol
I know those are gonna be issues I just wasn't sure how soon I should worry.

I have ran 3 resource sites on a shared server before with each site getting 2k+ a day in visitors and had no issues and have had one site getting 8k visitors a day all images hosted onsite again with no issues

Thanks Jason and everyone else.
I appreciate the feedback.

sorry, I didn't see that about it being a shared server. that is a little questionable, personally, I would choke up the $ to get a server that isn't shared as you're already putting yourself at an uncontrollable disadvantage to start with (being as though someone elses sites can effect your sites performance).
There are some places that have DIRT CHEAP servers. Somewhere in the $60-100/month range. It might sound like a lot to start, but remember, it's an investment. $3/day covers your costs, everything else after that is profit. Gives you a reason to push your site hard. Definitely make sure that you get your own IP's though. You don't want someone else on your shared host to do something bad, google bans that ip, and now you pay the penalties for that.
