I don't rank well for any of the so called 'premium' 2-word keywords and even for more specific keywords like "black myspace layouts" I'm only on page 3 in spite of optimizing the page through SEO. I'm all the way stuck on page 4 for "myspace layout generator" and I should be higher. Maybe page 2.

Kinda sucks

Unless, you have deep pockets, know black hat or have a huge network of sites, it would serve you best to target the low hanging fruit...not the creme de la creme.

I get lots of traffic for obscure queries. Stuff like

"free myspace layout trinidad" WTF? or "girly default myspace layouts"

I spent several months working on a top 10 2-word keyword for one of my sites. I was in and out of the 1st page serps for months. Last month I showed up and stuck. #2 in MSN, #3 in G, #4 in Y for the past 2 weeks. I know all could be gone again tomorrow, but I just keep plugging away at it. Nearly all of my work has been off page.

Its pretty hard to rank well for top keywords without a domain thats at least a year old. Google places to much weight on domain age IMO.

I agree with minnseoelite. Domain age should have way less to do with how you rank, and it should have more to do with whether your site is actually more relevant than the other. I don't rank for many obscure keywords, but instead get most of my SE traffic from the 2 keywords I rank number 1 for, and other than that I'm not having much luck targetting any other keywords.

I have a domain thats about 4 years old, that is not myspace related (ofcourse), but has been a pr3 for the last 3 years consistently. It is a free sms site, and I have not paid any attention to it for the last 3 years. Would it be wise to convert it to a msrs site?

Ad,

I took a quick look at radpimps.com. Here are some things I've noticed:

1) Less than 10,000 total backlinks to site; the top ranking sites for two word myspace keywords have at least ten times that many backlinks

2) Pages lacking in text; content is mostly in the form of pictures; give the search engine spiders some food (ie text)

3) The site has some 404 when you click on the left menu

If this is the wrong URL, let me know.

I started targeting difficult keywords lately. If I succeed I'll feel like I can do anything.

i'm pretty sure that a domain that old will avoid any sort of sandboxing by google.

Hard? Well I consider Myspace Generators to be a good keyword and I have made it onto the 3rd page in only 3 weeks. Or however long it has been since Memorial Weekend.

I think if follow very specific rules for setting up your site for SEO, then you can do just fine. Right here on this forum is a great amount of information on how to do just that. And there is even more information on the web.

I personally didn't know much at all about SEO before I joined here, but I've learned so much in this forum. There's enough info here to rank well.

you could do that yes, you will not loose any PR as long as your site still has all its incoming links. I bought a 6 yr old domain that used to be an art site and converted it to a msrs site and within two weeks it was ranking for over a dozen secondary keywords......i then sold it 4 months later lol

I used to rank front page for "myspace backgrounds", actually the site still does rank on the first page in google for those keywords, but i cashed out september last year. I didnt have an old domain name, it was only registered earlier that year, it didnt have the word myspace or backgrounds in the domain either, to be honest, i didnt do a lot of SEO, the site hasnt changed since i sold it, except for adding some other pages. the new owner hasnt done anything in terms of link building, has just left the site running for the 9 or so months he has had it. The way i built up that good ranking for that highly competitive keyword was just 10 or 15 link exchanges with other sites with the specific keyword, i paid for a few thousand directory submissions with that keyword as the title, and i also made it so when a person used a code on their myspace profile, it would have a link back to the site with that keyword as the anchor text. it wasnt rocket science, wasnt insider knowledge, just a little bit of reading and learning from other sites, one book which is highly recommended is www.seobook.com, a real insight into the most basic of SEO which every webmaster should know. I have started building up a new myspace site now, also giving my hand at myeeos, so it should be fun to climb the ranks again in the SERPs to build some mega traffic.

PS. the site in question is www.profilestyling.com, nothing special, not your common typical myspace php script, just a basic script i wrote.

ad disengaged, just a tip - if you're talking about your site radpimps, try putting up some different content. That exact content is on hundreds of other websites so google might be penalizing you for that.

radpimps.com has been in the sandbox since I launched it in Jan 07. It doesn't rank for anything. myspace resource.info, my main site, got de-sandboxed in March after I bought the domain July. It uses the same old turnkey layouts cause I don't feel like spending money on layouts and graphics. Content is important so im working on it.

The home page of myspace resource.info looks stuffed with keywords in the section with red letters. When a user clicks, say myspace mp3 player, there is actually no mp3 player generator on your site. You need better content than that. Google apparently pays attention to user interaction with your site. Things like adding your site to favorites, time spent on your site, click through rate of your listing in Google search results, etc. are mentioned in a patent filed by Google.

The section below the red letters also look to me like keyword stuffing. You need to build your site for users, not to artificially increase relevance of keywords.

In addition, the site has less than 10,000 backlinks. Top ranking sites have at least 50,000 backlinks.

Yea I know.. don;t have time to actually create individual content for each of those 100 keywords.

Maybe if I create content for 5 pages a day I'll be done in a month. I just dont have the time to get to it. And the content has to be original.

Just work on 3 - 4 keywords at a time and in a few months you should be starting to rank for a dozen different keywords

Ranking well now is very hard since those 'big' sites have way too many backlinks. Pimp-my-profile has over million backlinks...
