what is the easy way? I am guessing directories. anyone know of some good software to automate that process instead of doing it all manually?

software is ok but alot of the software programs submit to sites that use redirects or other SE unfriendly link methods.
As for directories they are a good source of one way backlinks. Go to DP forums (god forbid lol) and look for a member called eXe he has a group that does submissions to 500 search engine friendly directories for $25 and I believe will do smaller packages as well for cheaper. He has a thread on DP for it as well, I have used him 2 times so far with great results and you get a report with all the directories your site was submitted to by email when they are done which usually takes 3 - 4 days to complete

May I also take this opportunity to point you at Dotcompals over at DP.
He does a similar submission to exe but he also runs a service where he submits to every new directory he finds (and approves) on seo forums for $20/month.Last month it was 225 new dirs and so far this month it is 199.You can have multiple anchors and descriptions etc and he has a great team.He is also a great guy.I get multiple emails every day "thankyou for your submission etc" and you also get a Google spreadsheet which he keeps up to date with all the submissions.

What preferred directory categories do you choose for MySpace sites when using one of the submission services?

blogs

website templates
social networking (some directories have this category now)

Its really easy actually. When I start a new site the first thing i do after launching it is go to exe on DP and order his 500 SE friendly directory submissions for like $35...within a couple of days its all done and within probably a month all my directory links have been indexed

And then what do you do beyond that? What sites do you to go for your article submissions and press releases?

Not free but the EASIEST way to build BIG backlinks is to sponsor a wordpress theme. Those things go like hotcakes and your links are sitewide(typically). I'm sure they are devalued to an extent but they can get you indexed quick and provide traffic.

Avoid Dp spammers & switchcoat scammers and avoid crap 'approval waiting time' **** directories with Zero PR
Instead drop your links on myspace profiles. There are many profiles with PR of 4 or higher and all you have to do is get your link there. Ill leave the details for you.

Are there even any spots where you can put your link without it being filtered with the msplinks stuff?

Well, share the wealth man. Unless you're talking about adding it in the about me section of a profile or something where it might not filter, how you're going to get it on tons of pages, legit of course, is beyond me.

msplinks are not filtered from corner tags or from within the profile like the about me section only the comments

Cool, I'll have to make some agreements with people to add my links to their about me's and stuff. The next thing is someone is going to be going around and finding the pages with the highest PR and paying those users to post stuff

That stuff sucks and has become overly commercialized and over used.
Theme designers got greedy and started making themes selling 3 or 4 links per theme and that's just overkill.

I agree that's overkill, but the trick is still to find a good theme, with a good designer and work out long term relationships. There are extremes to every method and this one works great for me.
BTW, anyone want to sponsor a theme? ;)

Yes, I'd be interested in hearing how you link inject on other people's myspace profiles without commenting on their profile.
Another way to build a lot of backlinks quickly is to use textlink ads.

I don't know, that can be pricy. From what it looks like Google is starting to devalue links from directories, unless they are a respected name. ex. Yahoo Directory, AvivaDirectory, AliveDirectory etc...

I created a script that can create back links for you. It takes recent titles from google blog search and adds your link/content, then submits that feed to weblogs.com where BH scrapers add your content/link to their site and you get a back link.
Read about it here:

PM me if your interested.
