View Full Version : Internet withdrawals

I was knocked offline for a few days while changing isp (it was supposed to be 30 minutes but my previous isp booted me off early).

I hadn't realised how hooked I was on the Internet! I've been suffering withdrawals.

IDD, I call it - Information Deficit Disorder. :s

Symptoms - lack of concentration, sighing, complaining, light-headedness, feelings of reality, to name but a few ...

Same thing happened to me lasttime I went to the beach and saw that the promised internet connection in the room didn't exist.

Funny how not having internet can make you not enjoy your vacation so much

It's those feelings of reality, that freak me out....:clown:

Actually I am bloody addicted to the damn thing...I can't walk past the door to the computer room without looking in and checking how my stocks are going or checking the latest emails....

I spend most of the day then most of the evening in here..... I gotta get out more and have a social life.
My friends and family know I'm not going to go to their house so they keep popping in here to see me.....and I'm always at the computer when they do

Moving house ended up with me losing internet access for 3 weeks recently!
Then my phone broke and then my digi box gave up the ghost.
We were "Technologically Disabled".
Thankfully we went to Tenerife to get over it...

I would've been moving back to my old house until the internet connection was back up. 3 days was more than enough :surrender:

I went to Portland for the weekend a couple weeks ago and about lost my mind not being able to connect. I'll never book a room with wireless again. If they don't have ethernet, I'm not staying.

400 rooms. probably one router and a couple repeaters..... yea sure, you'll have access.

lol. I have a hard time even being away for the 10 or so hours on the days I work. At least I get internet on my cell phone so I can check in on a few things like some email and such. But I can't do much with it.

redundancy is the key...

DSL is my primary.
Dialup as a backup
Cellular modem as backup backup <--- damn expensive to use!!

I would agree with you, MrGeek.

DSL is my primary
Kicking the next-door neighbour's kid off of his computer is my only backup.

Fortunately I live in a neighborhood littered with unsecure wireless connections, and some are on Cable and some are on DSL :)

It's being out of town that gets me down :(

I've been knocked offline for around 4 days this time. Grrrr.

Currently, my line speed is about 256k - but that will diminish to less than 130k and then evaporate to nothing by breakfast time as more people get online.

Some kind of line fault that noone wants to actually fix - ISP blames the line supplier who says get the ISP to run a line check and 'report any problems'. Round and round in circles. They said 24 hours. Like, 5 days ago. Meh! Same **** as before too.

So I've had to get up at 6.00am just to touch base before the line noise gets too much and I'm unable to connect.

Ho bloody hum.

/end rant
:hang:

No backup plan?

Nope. Not really.

Well, I finally got fed up with the nonsense and told the ISP they had till Monday to get their crap sorted out or else they could shove it. If it wasn't fixed by then, they could {insert choice words here} and I would move to an ISP who would supply me broadband.

Whaddya know? I go out for a couple of hours, come back, and suddenly I'm running at 3Mb. Still not what I've paid for but better than the 128K I was running at earlier for the 20 minutes I was able to connect.

Now I'm in a quandry -- to get past this nonsense and have a firm backup in place, I ordered a second telephone line I was gonna use for dedicated broadband with another ISP -- now I'm not certain whether to do this or not. Hmmm. Better wait a few days to see what happens.

Do you have a cell carrier that offers broadband? My new laptop (here on the 14th. still waiting) has it built in for cingular/verizon and they provide unlimited service at (a supposed 196K, but from what i hear it's more like 56K... True 56K) about $60 a month.

Currently we have clearwire as a backup plan.

No, nothing so up to date where I live. The second line is still looking like the best option.

Well... I am off to the beach for a few days. Will be nice to get some rest, but I will sure miss loggin in and checking my sites. Hope everything goes OK, nothing worse than coming back from vacations and having to fix tons of site-related problems

I'll actually be online while I'm gone though.

This is cool! I am staying at a hotel near the airport and will be leaving tomorrow, but right now I can pick up the wireless signal from a nearby hotel
So at least I get the chance to connect for another day
