View Full Version : Marketplace Fee

We've paid attention to the recent discussions surrounding the Marketplace and it's become apparent that making it free has done more to harm than good to the Marketplace.
We're taking the suggestion of re instituting the Marketplace fee, but to show you that we're not doing this for financial gain we've made it $0.99. We feel the debate has already taken place, so this isn't a discussion thread rather an announcement.
However, if you feel you have something to say about other ways to improve the Marketplace, feel free to post here.

I would like it if we could go back and edit our posts instead of having to post again and again and again >_< I like to keep threads clean but I can't do that if I can't edit my post. If we could edit the titles too. This is seriously the first forum I've ever stayed at that doesn't allow the members to do more with their posts and stuff. I don't know the exact reasoning as to why there isn't the edit feature but I think we should have it.

This has been a topic of much discussion, but we stand by our decision. Being able to change your OP causes more issues than not. This niche especially seems to draw enough dishonest people that it's just not an option right now.

I think that the fee is a great idea, and I am glad you placed it back into the marketplace.
And this is not really a suggestion, but more of something I would like to get everyones opinion on. I'm not saying we need to use this.
..... How about a point system for giving away freebies? Not automatically granted points for giving away freebies, but we, the users, give the user freebies depending on how we like what they made or something.
A user can only give that person 1 point per thread (or however the rep system works too..), and this can be a way to pay for the marketplace fee for those users who can't pay it.
You would have to set a standard of how many points = .99cents or something.
Idk, just a suggestion.

How about its based on getting rep from freebies or something.
////yah but this system isnt fool proof :(

I think a point system would be abused just like the rep system is/was.

I'd like to see some improvements to the auction system here, be it something as simple as threads automatically closing at the stated time of ending or a full-on auction mod of some sort.

.99 cents?
Not bad really.
We have to pay after or before we sold everything?
Because someone might have like no money selling something and then actually get money.
Anne

The Marketplace fee is paid in advance, prior to posting your sales thread.
nsmchris
July 6th, 2009, 01:15 PM
The entire reason for the fee coming back is to prevent all the crap sales threads that have been popping up. If you don't think your product will make the .99c back, then you probably shouldn't be posting it to begin with.

Yes, you're supposed to manually send it to my pp addy and I approve it :shuriken:

I think someone should unlock the start and close feature if you guys have it here.
For auctions that is. It seems like everyone doesn't ever know when auctions end and if we could just set the time for it to end and the thread would close then whoever put the final bid in the thread before it closed would win. Would get rid of a lot of confusion.

July 6th, 2009, 02:06 PM
Raise it to $1.99 for dolla profit.
Anyway Greg, my suggestion:
I still think the only threads that should show up in recent posts is
- marketplace
- myspace info center and chat
- web developer
- advertising and marketing
- seo or anything search engine related
Edit: If you're going to keep the price at $.99 how about lowering the maximum threads allowed. I don't think anybody has made 100 marketplace threads. Just a suggestion:)

I agree with the marketplace fee. However I do not like to see random discussion threads on the front page of the forum. It takes away from the actual purpose of the forum. People can say if you don't like it, don't read it. How are we supposed to know the thread is about personal problems if the title only says "Oh wow" or something equally as vague.
I do post in the random discussion part of the forum, I just think the threads shouldn't be listed in latest discussion.

July 6th, 2009, 05:54 PM
I support the fee mainly cause in general there was much better content when there was a fee and overall sales threads seemed more professional.
I'd really like to see guidelines to reduction of prices. I don't think asking for one price that only sells to a few and then reducing to another just to sell more isn't right. I think people who sell should ask for what they want and sell it for nothing less! Things are only worth what people will pay for it.
I think there is many of us that see things go on here and think to ourselves how it is just asking for trouble. Like others paying for others since they're trusted by one and not the other for example. I think as a community we should strongly discourage this and at least request that if you engage in such it must be done privately. I think this will protect more members from being scammed and those silly conflicts we've been having.

Not to be rude, but not that many people are effected by "how things are" at this point in time, so 0.99 is fine.

I'm glad we kept it low, so it doesn't have to be absolutely discouraging.
I know some of you guys think it's a hassle but really, this is nothing compared to the $5 fee we had to pay back then. So just be thankful it's not even close to $5 (to the newbies who weren't here that time)..
Besides, this should bring back our quality sales. (Y)

I agree with the fee. My suggestion is to not allow so many freebies. Why does anyone need to buy anything when there are all the freebies? I say a member can only make a freebie once a month.

August 13th, 2009, 04:16 PM
In my opinion the fee is bad. Yes, it stops people from posting duplicate threads, which do get annoying. And it stops things moving so fast down. But hey, its a forum, and people are attracted to the fact they can post link spots for free! If you want to advertise your link spots, and you dont want it to be pushed down, why did you come to a free forum? :P
Hmm..Its okay for the people with big sites, that get a lot of income, and can pay 0.99 without flinching. But my site only brings in about $15 a month, which then gets re-invested into buying links to help my site grow. This is the only money I can afford to invest! My mum and stepdad are getting divorced after 17 years of marriage with an okay income, mum hasnt been allowed to work for years, so we are now living off benefits, baring in mind there are 4 kids and one mum. I want to go to university and eventually do a PHD in clinical psychology, plus Im working to pay for things like internet and my site, and a social life, and clothes for 6th form. You say 0.99 isnt a lot, but for me with my $15 investment into my site, it is! $15 in my currency is £9, which might buy me 2 pairs of jeans from the second hand shop if im lucky! Id never even made any money from my site till I came here!
Sorry if its all a sob story, and i know people are going to pick holes in what I have said but I refuse to pay 0.99 in order to post a thread! Its like paying to play a game online! Whats the point. Id much rather spend 0.99 on treating myself to a bar of chocolate, or buying a pen for school!

Yes.. exactly. "Dont post in the marketplace".. The only reason I come on here, like many others, is to sell link spots, and maybe give some freebies out. Now that isnt available to me anymore, I have no reason to come.
Which shows it might be a bad thing for MSP because interest could be lost, as members move on to forums which dont charge to post in their marketplaces..

August 13th, 2009, 04:40 PM
Thing is, majority of the forum members wanted the fee back, so it's not necessarily a bad thing...
It's actually made the forum better to be honest. We don't see fifty million threads for poor graphics/layouts/links, etc
And there really is no other forum to go to, all the others are just as dead as this one....Good luck though :)

Yeah, I agree. Its been much nicer without the lower quality graphics. :)
And yeah, there arent any other forums to go to, which is good. :D But im kinda stuck now. :I I got links to sell, and no where to sell them, and my site is only likkle. :P 0.99 isnt a lot in the wide scheme of things, but I find it hard enough spacing out $15 a month to buy links. Thats like, one month on the average PR3, 5k UV site. I advertise new spots once or twice a month, thats like, $1.98. $13.02 is so near, yet so far away from that spot. :(
Hmm.. was disabling threads until someone had been a member for a certain time ever tried? :P Nah.. its cool. I guess I will just have to shift some stuff around with my budgeting and give myself an extra $2 for my site.

Just wait until your link spots run out and sell them all at one time. Don't sell them one at a time. If you have 10 spots for example and you sell them for $4, selling them one at a time is going to make you only $3.01 per spot for a total of $30.10. On the other hand, if you let them all run out and start at the same time, you can sell all 10 for $4 each, you get to keep $39.01.
Look at the brighter side, before marketplace links were free, they were $5 for a period of time.

Selling in the marketplace is like selling your products in a mall. For you to be able to sell, you need to rent a space.
Sure the marketplace was free before but it was a mess. As a buyer, browsing through a little less than a hundred new threads everyday is just time-consuming. It's not like all we ever do in life is sit in front of the computer and lurk on MSP.
$.99 for me who's an urban poor from a 3rd world country is expensive lol. But if it's the price of an orderly marketplace then im fine with it.
That way, when sellers make stuff to sell, they'll make it so at least 1 buyer will buy from them. They'll make effort to make quality stuff.
And as a site owner who sell link spots, with the $.99 fee in mind, you'll also try hard to maybe improve your site to get high PR and UVs so people will be interested in advertising on your site.

I am happy with 99 cents if its going to keep spammers out,
Its annoying people who do that 15 posts crap.
Make it you have to be a member for 60 days and have 15 posts or something, because you get spammers on here coming in doing 15 posts in 10 mins in all random threads.

Put it in to perspective, if you have 6 link spots available, and sell them for 3 dollars each, it's worth it to spend .99 to make 17.01.
As the old saying goes "You have to spend money to make money".

The fee and the requirement were put in to place to combat spamming and needless posts, neither will be removed. If you look around the forum, I'm sure you can find threads that you may have some useful input to offer, and then the 20 post requirement won't be that much of a problem.
