I want to take a survey of what stats counters everyone seems to prefer.. awstats is probably a biggie but I know some of you prefer others..
can you also list if this lists uniques by visits or unique gets.. the difference being, does it count hits from myspace who view your hosted graphics on a users page as a unique user (awstats does this) or does it only list people who actually call your actual pages..
I have been using Mint lately and I really like it a lot.. with all of the plugin modules a lot of useful data can be extracted.. very web 2.0ish... it also has a handy vista and osx dock app to give u a live stats view by day/month/hour which I find very cool..
Since mint strictly tracks actual web visitors (non graphic requests or generator resources embeded in profiles) I also pair this with "Visitors" which is a cool stats package I found in the freebsd ports.. It gives a much broader stats view which also includes resource requests and lists the frequent referals and crawler breakdown..
so thats my setup.. i'd be interested in hearing your experiences/preferences..

mvtracker seems very inaccurate, always says I get like 500 uniques less than what I'm really getting. Mainly I go by my cpanel (awstats) but extremetracker.com seems to be pretty good.

I've been using statcounter for years and it seems pretty accurate (uniques), recently tried awstats which seems to hugely inflate the numbers (uniques) as mentioned earlier but does give some good information on other aspects.
Personally I think you need to check a few stats to get a general overview of how your doing, stick to just one and, well your limiting your information on how your doing.
Google Analytics does seem to be the best overall although for me a little complicated.

Mint and Google Analytics.
As for those who say statcounter, it's not as accurate as Mint or Analytics. I've used all three and statcounters's numbers are inflated a good amount, especially for sites with a lot of traffic.

You using the pro version? I've looked at it before.
Also, are you using the PHP code on your server? I didn't quite get how that works.

pro version, just the javascript, the php one has a bunch of useless stats that I dont need and it seemed to slow down my pages

so would you say that a lot of these people touting 10k uv's are using awstats or some stats program that shows all uniques (including those just pulling down images, like awstats does) or they truly have 10k visitors to their site browsing their pages..
I guess the reason I was asking was I see a lot of these sites offering link exchanges for "high traffic" sites saying they had 10-15k UV's a day and want sites in the same range.. if they're counting stats like awstats then thats nothing..
for example.. yesterday was a slow day for me and I got about 2500 UV's according to mint but awstats showed about 30k uniques for all requests..
there's a huge difference.. people loading just images are almost worthless to people purchasing advertising on your site..

Mvtracker is 100% accurate
unless of course people have javascript turned off.. or using a proxy that does not properly utilize javascript..
mint uses the same method..
as for the "current visitors online" stuff.. this is usually done via a timeout.. depending on how often they set this timeout too.. it could be a bit off.. the only data they would have is a heartbeat via javascript or by tracking the time since you last requested their tracking code.. through the later method they have no idea if you loaded the page and then closed the browser.. or if you're a slow reader and only click on another page every 5 minutes.. i dunno.. its not an exact science..

And how many people browse the net with java off? 1 out of 1000?

Yeah, everyone has javascript on.
If your looking for link exchanges then just ask for a different stat program if all they provide is awstats.

i use the pay version of extreme tracker and google analytics... the pay version of extreme shows me how my pages rank against each other.. so I like that. also, awstats.

And how many people browse the net with java off? 1 out of 1000?
according to w3schools.. about 60 out of 1000 ..
their survey of web traffic shows only 94% of users have javascript enabled..
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
I would also say this number is a lot higher in the case of myspace sites.. many many people browse via proxies on myspace.. many of the common proxy scripts only have limited support for javascript..
I could see this number climbing somewhat as the public becomes more aware of malicious javascripts and xss type attacks.. Some people are advocating the use of selective javascript enabling (much the same as allowing activex controls in limited zones in IE) in these cases your site would need to be whitelisted to have javascript run in their browser.. This is just my guess, not that worrying but something to think about..

I must agree with miller2348, HaveaMint "Mint" is great it so nice and easy.. It does take some resources on the server but its worth the trouble!!

In that case, my site would get 25k uniques per day.

I use Google analytics and mvtracker.
Google Analytics should be everyone's main source to rely on statistics. It is by far the most accurate. The only problem, is it isn't updated realtime.
Mvtracker is good, but once you are finished with the trial, you can't look at much. But it seems to be fairly accurate, and i love how you can see the last 20 referrers, because you get to see the myspace profile hits and see what layouts or graphics people used from your site. :)
Extreme tracker would be awesome, but i hate the last 20 referers, because from what i have seen most of them are just links from other pages of your own site. Maybe i'm doing something wrong when i'm looking at. Am I?

i can see the last 300 referrers in the pro version of extremetracker, and none of them are from your own page. It isn't that expensive either, unless you're getting a lot of traffic, then they charge you more ;)
