View Full Version : Infractions and Forum Management

As you may or may not know, there is an infraction system on MSP. As mods, we've largely ignored the infraction system and have tried to handle problems via PM, instant messenger, or within threads. While this method is more personable, it's not as effective as we would like.

We want to know what YOU think is just cause for receiving an infraction. Above is a list of possible forum offenses. Please check any and all offenses that you believe merit infractions.

This information will help us in determining what YOU the forum members find offensive and objectionable. It will also define a method for issuing infractions, temporary bans, and permanent bans.

You are welcome to make comments, but this thread will be heavily monitored. Please keep your comments intelligent. If there is any forum offense that we have missed, please feel free to post your opinion.

This list is not definitive, but will be used by the mods as a guideline when posting the re-issued Forum Rules.

Thanks!!

I am so glad that you have posted this thread. I did vote too. I have to say that many of these situations have happened to me and I have been hurt more than one time by members on here. Yes, I am pretty sensitive but it has more to do with respect. I hope everyone takes this seriousily. This is a "professional" forum and we should all act accordingly. I hope this makes a big difference.:)

What about using someone else's work to showcase what you can do? Would that be classified as posting misinformation?

Also, I have a question regarding banning. What kind of offenses constitute a temporary ban, and what will result in a permanent ban?

Oh yeah i voted awhile ago. Forgot to post. Lmao.

jessidel

the infraction system is based on points. points will be assigned to each offense.

collect enough points and receive a 24hr temp ban.

collect three temp bans and receive a permanent ban.

I don't know if iTrader, Picture Comments, PMs matter but those are other methods that aren't included in the list. I'm not trying to bring back old crap but I've also given infractions for avatars and statuses.

And I can't believe people are saying we should receive infractions for language when all the foul words are filtered? Is that for something like if I posted a rant thread and used "f-cking" every 4 words or would people be getting infractions for saying "cr@p" lol.

jessidel
February 25th, 2009, 02:41 PM
PM's won't be monitored or infractions given in any way. There's a reason they're called PRIVATE messages.

As for pic comments, avatars, status messages... those can be bundled under inappropriate content. If it's inappropriate and visible to forum members, then it's something that an infraction will be given for....

"purposely posting misinformation "

I think that's just asking for trouble.

I also think this will discourage people from posting.... :)

I mean how do you know for sure it was on purpose, unless they admit to it?
The internet is full of misinformation.

I don't believe in Law, non Parent authority, rules or regulating.

Andrew, maybe they are referring to any and all foul words like..."wh*re"..."sl*t"...c*nt"..words like that.
Just a few examples.

Calling my MSP mates "sluts" is going to get me banned then?
Melissa I will have nothing to call you :( This is madness! That's what we do, I don't think people need to butt in if two friends talk to eachother like that.

On the other hand if someone writes a comment on someone's photo and seriously calls them a **** or slutty I would see the problem.. Is there going to be that line or is the rule going to be restrictive?

ROFL That made my year!

I think these are kind of vague too, so I only picked one. Like a mild insult to one another occasionally isn't bad. I do it and its been done to me. Like, "Wow, you're ignorant" or "jerk!". It would have to be moer severe to me. Like that one guy who kept being mean to that poor guy in every one of his posts and threads, he would be like, "go to hell you damn arab, learn english or stfu! You're so dumb!" Now that is mean.

So along with the others, I believe there are certain levels. Like posting misinformation. Sure some people do it on purpose, but what if I don't realize its not relevant to the situation? I don't want to get in trouble for that. And so on down the line of "causes".

If you're calling each other sl uts on your profile pages.. have at it. In PM's.. go for it. Hijacking a thread to toss around a few names casually? GO to IM.

Keep in mind that MSP is a business forum, not a social forum.

Before anyone freaks out... stop worrying. Infractions aren't going to be handed out like candy at Halloween. Almost everyone in the forum uses common sense when posting. Some of the items may not even warrant an infraction, an we'll keep it to a PM... as mods, we just want an idea of what YOU ALL believe to be Major enough to warrant an infraction..

More rules for what purpose?

To stop "inappropriate postings"... I see that

However, this is only going to decrease discussion and activity if people get in trouble for little things that honestly shouldn't be worried about
Everyone's heard it, life is short
We have a good amount of members here, all different kinds of members, with different opinions

But the most important thing is we want to increase commerce, increase discussion, increase activity, and increase posting

And I personally don't think giving infractions will help the situation out at all

But good luck

:)

This is not a discussion of forum rules. This is to gain information on what types of behavior members feel should and should not receive infractions.

my opinion is flaming, rude, or aggressive behavior, insulting members & marketplace violations should be the most important ones. since this is a business forum i don't think inappropriate language should matter as long as the person is not insulting anyone else, js

We want to know what YOU think is just cause for receiving an infraction. .... Please check any and all offenses that you believe merit infractions.

Just a simple request. We aren't setting these as rules, we just want to know what the members opinion are on certain items. Most forums wouldn't care about your opinion and the admin/mods would impose whatever rules they want. So check the ones you think are bad and submit. If you don't like any, leave them all unchecked and submit.

Again, we aren't forcing rules on you, we are just interested in getting your opinion. We are just as interested in the success of MSP as most of you. But I do consider this a business forum first.

As far as misinformation, we aren't talking about getting tricked into a rick roll or someone unknowing posting bad information. Its more of the malicious information. Its easy to tell when someone is genuinely trying to help and when someone isn't.

if i can't come here and speak my mind (if there are some curse words) than whats the point of venting if i could just get banned?

"inappropriate content on personal profiles"
keyword: personal, if they dont like than they shouldnt return to the page. Its none of their businesses what other people are talking about.

"insulting other members"
they shouldnt take it personal, we dont know each other in real life.

"posting inappropriate content"
if i got an infraction for everytime i put something inappropriate, i'd prob. be banned.

I voted. I think this place should be just strict enough that it protects the members' best interests, but not so strict that it's no longer fun and people are walking on...eh typing with eggshells? Common sense, common courtesy, non-analness, pro-sarcasm...a good mix of it all should apply when it comes to deciding who will get points. But if someone fs-up big time once, they should just go. jmo.

Oh, kind of off-topic, but instead of that 15 post limit for PMs and the market place, wouldn't it be better if new people were required to post in the welcome area? They would have to post something more than, hi - new here. Then a mod could look it over to make sure it's legit and then let him or her post in the market place and send pms.

That would negate some of the frustration that could lead to some of the issues in this poll. I know it would be more work for the mods, but it might be worth it.

Yeah alot of people agree with that, But the only person who can do anything major like that is Greg and he's been busy with other things :(

This poll has alot of votes :)

Can it be an option to just temporarily ban people if they show aggressive behavior? Like as a cooling off period or something, 2-6 hours? Usually people who are venting or arguing are over whatever it is they were arguing about the next day and a temporary ban is a good way to not only let the forum breath but those people breath. A few hours is more respectable than a week :( (not that I am speaking from experience right? :P) Just throwing it out there while this is still being discussed :)

Those really irritate me coz if no admin / mod is around, you only see those threads on top. :gunsmilie:

Classic :biggrin::biggrin:

Name calling is ok imo as long as "it's between 2 consenting parties" in fun (where have I heard that before...............oh yes .....in court last year.......but I digress) but I think that flaming members in blogs, personal pages, rep system should be dealt with if the person complains. This would also hold true in pm's....maybe.What do you think?

I voted and have to say I loved Andrew's post on the temp banning, still laughing.

Inappropriate means different things to different people. I have one daughter that I sling names back and forth with all the time, we know we don't really mean it, it's just in fun. But I have another daughter that would be totally crushed if her sister or me tried to do it with her, even in fun, she just doesn't "get it". The name calling between friends or done in a joking way is completely different than when done in anger so to me that shouldn't even be considered. I guess my question would be who determines it's inappropriate? Personally, I would prefer a little humor over a totally serious business approach. If your offended by the content then simply don't read it.

I'm more concerned with the many copyright violations(Disney, Looney Toons, American Greetings, etc.) that I see in here and the obvious thread bumping in the market place than I am about a little snipping back and forth between friends.

What is the difference if it is cute to be banned numerous times already?
Seems to be like a running joke..

It's like daycare.

The kids that get detention get to be cool in their friends, eyes while they create more work and special needs attention for the supervisors... lol

Then get welcomed back to population and get to make rules, call names, insult, post garbage, and carry on like nothing ever happened...
Meanwhile.. hundreds of dollars later.. people that have paid for the right to be here arent allowed to call it as they see it without getting someones feelings hurt.

To me, if the people cant stand the heat.. stay out of the kitchen.

And what is inappropriate content when disney and other high profile content is allowed to be slung in the marketplace?
"It's ok to blatantly infringe.. but god help you if you call someone a retard for being a retard." doesnt sound like a stable system for a forum in this realm.

as long as people get to slip through the cracks time after time.. what is the point?

thread bumping?
so people can't post in an old thread because it is outdated..
But feel free to start a new thread opening up like "i know this has been covered numerous times, but i'm too lazy to look it up so.." Because that is only annoying to the people who took the time to read it or look it up the first time. much less the person who offered the answer "way back then".

seems like a lot of backasswardsness lol

The rules have been dumbed down to one liners from a regular set of rules we used to have because people couldn't follow them before.. and people are still confused. But then again now half of the people here spell "know" like no.. and the mentality is like "i no u r but wut am i?" lol

i don't think the quality of the rules are going to heighten the quality of the members i think it is the other way around.
