On another note for those of you that use dedicated hosting why not just set up your own server at your home. For less than the cost of 1yrs hosting you can build and set up your own system.

This will give you total control over every aspect of your hosting and is not that difficult to do.

1. tower $30
2. good motherboard/CPU $300
3. good ecc reg ram 2gigs $250
3. hard drive/s 300gig $250ea
4. download linux FREE
5. download firewall FREE
6. additional software FREE
7. 10/100Mbps ethernet card $50

If you follow the manufactures and install instructions you can have this up and running in a day or less.

Are you really suggesting someone host their own server at home?

Well the main reason is many ISPs limit the upload bandwidth. Even if I had a T1 at home, I couldn't push enough of my data through...

Sure, setting up your own server at home is fun and all, but you can't run a business from it.

where do you plan on getting the 10/100mbit line to your house and how much is that going to cost you lol?

Also residential plans don't allow hosting a server

I hosted a few sites at home but cable was very unreliable so I had a t1 dragged out and still use it for some smaller sites but for a resuorce site T1 can not hanlde the load

The bandwidth will not be sufficient at all for a home server.

I couldn't run a server for any larger site at home, ADSL connection. 24mbit/sec downstream but upstream is crap.

A pipe big enough to host a site from my house or even my office is a $1,600 a month investment and I'm still only at 1/10 of the width I would need to be at.

Colo might be a good way to go, but even then the cost of the hardware needed to run a resource site could get well into 5 figures.

Me and a partner had a small/mid size computer store a while ago... when you buy your own parts, and something goes down, your screwed. you have to go out and buy new part because you can't wait 3 months or more for a manufacturers warranty. Our customers weren't too happy... but that's the policy.

My advice? Buy a dell computer and get the FREE, yes FREE onsite support that they offer. Remember when there used to be a bunch of small computer stores??? well, not anymore. :)
