View Full Version : What do you think about a host that does this?

I have a host that is moving it's datacenter.
Good news is there will be better generators, battery backups and air conditioning. Faster connection via multiple OC-48 fiber-optic lines etc.
Bad news is their method.
We’re scheduling to move your account to the new data center at the end of March or early April, so right around 6 weeks from now. The move will entail site unavailability for a period of 24 to 48 hours while we physically move the servers from one location to another. We are doing our best to minimize this timeframe.
I realize this spares them the cost of setting up all new servers, but surely there is some temp solution they could implement while the servers are physically moved?

At least they're giving you six weeks notice. Maybe the solution is to find a different host?

Gate.com did the same thing. They moved DC's from Miami to Tampa. I could just picture my server rolling down I-75. Made me sweat....

Pretty simple, move to another host for a couple days, then move back when it's completed ready for the brand spanking new additions!

This is my low grade host I use for low traffic sites. (actually they claim to be one of the top ten hosts) I'm weighing the time and cost of moving 8 sites with databases and scripts, messing with all the odd things like paths being different etc. (this host can be non standard in some things). It would probably suck my time away for a couple days and get me really pissed off. Maybe I'll just put up a temp page for each site.

I agree with geg2, At least your getting a notice...and six weeks at that.
My host upgrades, changes things w/o any warning to me. It sux to wake up to find your site going to an error page.

I think it's great that they gave notice instead of a sudden shut-down for 2 days. Maybe your host can offer some kind of compensation. One of my hosts did that when one of their servers died for days.

How much you wanna bet that if I don't do anything they will have their own error page up funneling the traffic through a search/product directory gateway?

one or two days on low traffic sites is nothing. might want to notify your link exchange partners if you have any and let them know so they don't go to your site and find it off line all day and have them remove your link on you.

well it depends on what you'll like to do. Do they always do this? If so maybe you'll wanna find a diff host, if this is one time thing, it's only for 1 or 2 days, stay with them :D

Hello Jazzylee77,
6 week notice, or 10 week notice, 24-48 hours of downtime is just not acceptable. I haven't met one client yet who has a profitable business that will allow their business to be down 24-48 hours.
Nevertheless, if you like that host that much, then redirect your traffic to a temporarily location, and once that host is back online, then redirect your site back.
Good luck!

It is very risky and if you don't want to move your host yet, just back-up your ENTIRE site. Or you could just move now. You can check out my packages if you would like:

Totally unacceptable. Run like the wind and find a new web host. NOW.
