but im not sure if its what i need
can anyone recommend a decent script...under 100$??

I'm just starting out on this also. I found this forum a couple months back, and you won't find a better class of helpful people anywhere. A lot of them own this forum creators script (Greg-J), and a lot of us also have other scripts. But everybody is here to help. Take some time to read as many threads as you can because there is so much info here it will make your head spin.

I think the thread link I posted contains just about all the scripts out there on the market so check it out.

I would strongly suggest doing whatever you can to make your site unique, whether it is design or content. Something to set your site out from the rest of the smiley faces out there.
