I was getting tired of the last layout of my site because it looked a bit messy so I tried to make a cleaner layout..

At first I really liked it because I prefer simple layouts but is this maybe a bit too boring?

Any recommendations on things I should change?

I think it would look better if it was fixed width and less wide. right now there seems to be overwhelming whitespace. maybe making the links or text enormous may have some interesting results.

Not really a big fan of fixed sizes because it really messes up in 800x600 (which my stoneage sister uses)

i think you should try making the font for the links bigger. that may solve the white pay issue with the fluid layout.

Your top row consists of your main categories. I would make the text in the top row a different color from the text below.

Made the main category titles 1pt bigger in size.

Just wondering, should the black striped background be replaced with a bright colorful background?

i suggest adding other colors to the main categories' headers to make the site look cuter but at the same time restoring its simplicity

use color tones that would compliment your background..
just a suggestion though =]
