Vbulletin is the best paid script. The next best option would be phpbb, or smf. Look them up.

phpbb was alright 4 years ago. If you want a ton of features, go with smf (simple machines forum). Otherwise, I quite like minibb, bbpress and Vanilla (when it works).

This is also another popular forum CMS http://www.invisionpower.com/

From my experience, I'd go with Simple Machines. I've had phpbb years ago, and it was alright, then started getting buggy, lots of security flaws & leaks started popping so I switched to Invision Power. It was decent at first, a little more features and security but still lacks a ton of stuff. Simple Machines is the way to go if you can't afford the VB at the moment.

If you're going for paid forum scripts like vbulletin or IPB think about the future of your forum when choosing the scripts because converting them removes members passwords. If you go for a free forum go for one of the more popular forums like SMF or Phpbb which you can easily convert if you ever decide to go for paid forum scripts :)

If you do find a free Vbulletin script, I wouldnt trust it, nor any other "Free Script"
unless you trust that site (or the person giving it to you)
Thats just setting yourself up to be hacked down the road.
Im pretty sure everybody already knows that though :)

I might be able to sell you an owned vbulletin license.

I think that if you're going to stick with your forum, then vbulletin is the way to go. It's very customizable and it pretty much grows with you.

There used to be as far as I recall a very basic free version of vBulletin, I think it was refered to as a trial version.

I've written a few forum software packages in my time and, to my opinion, punBB is probably the best bang for your buck ($0).

If you're looking for a free vBulletin, MK is right. SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/) is really the only option. phpbb has been all but abandoned.
