ok I was looking at ranks for one of my sites and checking out competitors as you do, to see what links they had and to see how many links they were getting.

What I really find weird is tis site ranking some times above me and some times blwo me has 37 pages, it also has like 10 links..I dont know how this site is even ranking...

my site having a large number of pages and many thousand links, one would think the other site would never rank above me, every factor I can think of I have covered I allways add new pages, new content ect ect...

Google really is a weird place for ranks at times.

Sometimes just "straight and to the point" content is enough to trump many other factors.

A few years back I was getting ready to put up a site specializing in kid's shoes. I tossed up a quick spash page with nothing on it except plain text "kids shoes and sneakers coming soon". For a while it ranked #2 on Google for "kids shoes" and #1 for "kids sneakers". I was soooo scared to put the actual site up for fear of losing the ranking, but the ranking was worthless without having the product content up there to sell lol.

Which is exactly how it should be.

Yep google uses many different ways to rank sites. Unique content is by far the best way to get to number 1#.

Connections what sites were they? It would be interesting to see the power of those 10 or so links.

My thoughts exactly. Although I think Jamie already considered this.

There's so many factors to consider in this case, I'm sure he's beating you for a good reason.

10 links can beat 1000 links if those 10 are coming from related sites with high authority or trust in Google and if your 1000 links are coming from non related sites or ones without much G weight.

Imagine if those 10 links all had the highest trust rank possible. Trust rank beats PR every time. That's why google keeps TR a secret. Ofcourse, you said the site also ranks below you sometimes. I'd like to see where the site is in a few weeks. The problem of figuring out why it ranks above you is compounded by the fact that you never see ALL of the links a site has with any service. Search engines lie about what backlinks they are counting, google more so than the others.
