Does anyone have any dedicated server recommendations?

I am looking into Media temples dedicated packages. Any views on this?

http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv/pricing.htm

I am looking for about 1TB transfer a month, with upgrade options for the future. I only need MySQL database really... apart from standard php file support I don't really use anything out of the ordinary on my sites. To be honest this whole dedicated scene is very new to me so I'm not sure what i'm getting, I don't seem to be able to find a site that sets out exactly what you get... or so I seem to think.

Also, what is 'short-path' traffic?

Thanks, any help or advice would be appreciated

They are virtual private servers not dedicated servers, the difference is that a VPS is one physical box split up to look like several.

From your point of view you have your own machine, but really your sharing a box with 4/6/8/16 others.

Performance is less than a dedicated server, but then the cost is less too.

Pitfall: Your sharing a machine, one resource hog can have an impact on you.

I've never heard of the company before, so I can't comment on them directly.

The only time I've heard of short-path traffic is in relation to networking, basically they route traffic smartly so it takes the shortest path to it's destination. (as does just about everyone)

Ahhh, thanks, glad that's pointed out.

I have read mt are quite good, but I was looking for dedicated.

The next place I was looking was gator host http://www.hostgator.com/dedicated.shtml

ev1server and steadfast have good service and reliable unmetered dedicated hosting plans.

I thought Hostgator was good until I realised how expensive it is when you start using serious bandwidth.
There are other much cheaper alternatives out there.

ev1 is very good. I have heard bad reports about hostgator support, but I can't confirm this.

I have read they are unmanaged, I don't think that appeals to me.

I read mainly good things from hostgator. except for expense above.

You can get someone to manage your server for $40 or so a month.

I've never used one of these services but I know others here have.

Its probably cheaper to get an unmanaged server and then get a 3rd party to manage it than buy a managed server.

I didn't know people existed for that, should have guessed really. In that case they become a possiblity. Thanks
