Would you shift a site from shared to dedicated (at 20k uniques daily)? Considering the fact that the shared guys won't shut off the site without informing and no extra bandwidth charges at the moment.

Any advantages you can think of?

Of course, 2-3 years ago when I used shared hosting for sites, I switched at around 15-20,000 uniques as well, and yes they did cut me off without telling me. :(

15-20k you should switch. Especially if you are hosting images on the same server... the load will kill you. Plus, with a dedicated server you have more control with the configuration. Lastly, if you're hitting 15-20k you should be making around 13k minimum a month and the server costs wouldn't be too big of a hit.

I'd love to know how you are supposed to hit 13k a month off that traffic? I've been at 15 to 20k for quite a while and never came close to 13k and I have a lot of advertising on my site.

This is not a myspace site so bandwidth is not such a big issue. The shared server owners haven't expressed concern so I have been cool with it. Actually they are friends, so they won't shut me off. BTW, one can't make 13k with 15-20k uniques. Even plastering 7-8 ads won't help.

my friend makes 20 K$ with 18000 K uv per day--> so yes it's possible

sorry it=>> a bit off topic lol

Then you should give us tips about how your friend does it. I am serious. People would pay you for the advice.

About the topic - I already have a dedi server for my other site, but was thinking of shifting from shared to dedic for my non-myspace site. Hence asking for opinions

It's really not just about the amount of traffic but also how your site is built. If you have a basic non dynamic html based site you can last a lot longer on shared hosting than if your site is a database/php based dynamic site. It all comes down to how much 'load' you are putting on the server.

I prefer using dedicated servers for my sites simply because it gives me more control over being able to monitor and optimize the experience my users are getting. It does cost more though, not only in money but also your time. You have to know what you are doing. If you get an unmanaged server you better know your stuff otherwise you can run into problems very quickly.

In a word... yes.

I had the plug pulled on my site without warning from Bluehost with less UV/day.
